In principle, the combinations are very easy to learn. There are only 10 of them, and they all make sense . Check them out and you can start playing poker right away.

Do you want to know more about the math behind these poker hands?

Royal Flush and Straight Flush

The very best two combinations are the Royal Flush and the Straight Flush. Both imply that you have five cards in a row, while they are all of the same suit. It's a Royal Flush if this is TJQKA. For the rest of the combinations we call it a Straight Flush. Furthermore, these two combinations are actually the same.

Four of a Kind

The name says it all. With the Four of a Kind combination you have four of the same cards. This hand is so good because there are only four of each card, so you must have all four.

Full House

In a Full House you first have three of the same cards, and for your other two cards you also have a pair. You may know this combination from the game. This game is therefore based on the combinations of poker.

Flush and the Straight combinations

The flush and the straight are both about having all your five cards work together. The best of the two, the Flush, requires you to have 5 cards of the same suit. For example 5 hearts or 5 diamonds.

For a Straight, you have 5 cards that are consecutive. Note that the Ace can also count as a 1! Examples of these combinations are A-2-3-4-5 or 8-9-TJQ.

Three of a kind

Three of a kind, also called a set of trips , is when you have three of the same cards. This combination is called a set if you have two cards out of three in your hand and one is on the board. If there are two on the board and only one in your hand, we call it trips.

Two Pair and Pair

You have a Pair when you have two of the same cards. With the combination Two Pair you have two of them. For Pair, you only have one.

High Card

Actually, High Card is not a combination , but rather a lack of all other combinations. If you don't have any of the above combinations, we're looking at the highest card you do have. We call that the High Card. This is also the worst combination you can have.

If two players have the same poker combination , we look at who has the highest card within the combination. Of course, if someone has a pair of aces that beats a pair of fours. Here are a few more examples:

KK333 is better than QQJJJ

99992 is better than 8888A

A6432 is better than KQJT8

AA22X is better than KKJJX

So you always look first at the highest card from the combination. If it is still the same, look at the next. You do this for all 5 cards in the combination. If both players still have the same thing in the end, split the pot equally between the players.
